Summer Day Ride Destinations

Mora Flats
This day ride departs from our upper horse pasture on Grass Mountain near the Iron Gate Campground and is the shortest of our Pecos Wilderness day rides. Mora Flats is a premier fishing destination, which is listed in most fishing guidebooks. It is ideally suited for the avid fisherman and the very young or old. It is a nice easy 2-hour descending trail ride to the Mora River with views across various mountains, canyons, and rivers below. This ride has the longest mid-day lunch break affording ample fishing and exploration time. Children often enjoy this ride as it is short enough to keep their attention, not too strenuous, and they have a sufficient enough break to enjoy the ride back. Most also enjoy the lure of a quiet nap in the open meadows and find enchantment amongst the small Elephant's Head flowers and various other plants which abound in this cool valley.

The return trip can vary from 2 to 3 hours depending on whether riders wish to follow the direct route back or an alternate scenic route up and over Hamilton Mesa (4 to 5 hours riding round trip).

Beatty's
This day ride often departs from our upper horse pasture on Grass Mountain near The Iron Gate Campground but alternatively may depart from, or return to Jack's Creek Camp Ground.

This ride typically proceeds over Hamilton Mesa and descends gradually to the Pecos River and open valley of The Beatty's Cabin Area. It is a moderate 3-hour ride to this destination, which is another favorite place for fishermen (6 to 7 hours riding round trip). Here the Rito Del Padre River pours into the Pecos River and in turn the Pecos River flows down through the wild waters of the Pecos Box. This area also provides other points of interest such as historical markers for the original Beatty's Cabin and the later placement of both the US Forest Service, and New Mexico Department of Game and Fish rustic cabins.

Riders may return over Hamilton Mesa or instead chose another scenic route out of this beautiful valley climbing along the edge of the Pecos Box, passing through the beautiful aspen groves and large meadows of Round Mountain and back into the Jack's Creek Camp Ground.

Pecos Baldy
This ride often departs from Jack's Creek Camp Ground and takes you closest to the highest peaks of the Pecos Wilderness offering the most breath taking views, and great fishing in a high mountain lake. Riders often see such wildlife as elk, deer, red tailed hawks, marmots, and big horned sheep. It is an easy trail ride over mountainous terrain winding upward along various creeks and through lush forests. Riders follow the same trail approximately 3 hours each direction to and from the Pecos Baldy Lake (6 hours riding round trip). At the lake riders take a long lunch break to eat, fish, nap, or hike.

Pecos Falls
This ride departs from our upper horse pasture on Grass Mountain near the Iron Gate Campground and is the longest day ride offered. It is 4 hours of mild to rough trails to and from the Pecos Falls (8 hours riding round trip) and due to the length of this ride, careful consideration should be taken based on each individual's age, and riding experience prior to reserving this trip.

The primary trail to the Pecos Falls is over the largely "level" Hamilton Mesa, which offers a great 360-degree view of the Pecos Wilderness. This trail gradually climbs and then descends to just below the headwaters of the Pecos River where the pristine waters of the Pecos Falls cascade gracefully over smooth rocks spilling 200 feet down into the winding river below. In the summer it is a favorite area for people to fish or frolic in the cool waters.

After an extended lunch break riders can chose to take an alternate scenic route back through Beatty's and up across Hamilton Mesa or return directly along the same entry route.
